I discovered yoga in my early twenties, when my work-life balance was, well, out of balance, and my posture and mental health were suffering from long hours at a desk. It was a welcome break from the pressure and busyness of daily life. Though my yoga practice waxed and waned over the years, a trip to India 5 years ago reignited my passion. When I returned home to Derby, I found not only a great yoga teacher, Christine, but also a warm and welcoming yoga community at The Breathing Space Derby, that made me feel right at home. I found a consistent, varied and nourishing practice that has supported me physically, emotionally and spiritually ever since. In 2020 I made an unexpected relocation from (hilly urban) Derby to (flat rural) Lincolnshire. At first I missed the hills, but during the covid lockdowns of 2020 I found the joy of practicing outdoors in the garden, and spent a good deal of time sky gazing! The flatness of the fen provided expansive horizons, stunning cloud formations, beautiful whole sky sunsets, the full arch of a rainbow. I experienced the dark rural skies, with a million dazzling stars and the beauty of the moon in a way not possible in an urban area.

As a graduate of a 200 hours Yoga teaching training from The Breathing Space School of Yoga, accredited by Yoga Alliance, I’m excited to share my learning. My classes are designed to be inclusive and welcoming to everyone. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or just starting out, my teachings are rooted in body and breath awareness, with a focus on empowerment, cultivating self acceptance, compassion and gratitude. In addition to my yoga practice, I'm also level 1 and 2 Angelic Reiki attuned and love to infuse my classes with healing energy.

At Open Skies Yoga I believe in the power of connection, to each other and the world around us, whether that’s the dynamic energy of the open sky, the grounding peace of the earth beneath your feet or the connection to your true self found through your own yoga practice.

Join me on the mat and discover the transformative power of yoga for yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never practiced yoga before what can I expect?

This depends on which class you choose. But most classes are a mixture of standing, seated or lying down postures. Classes tend to start with a grounding practice to focus the mind and the breath, there will always be a movement warm up, a main physical section, finishing with a seated or lying relaxation. We often finish with a short breathing practice and/or meditation. The speed of movement, the length of the holds and the level of physical engagement can all be modified at all times by you! Every suggestion I make is an invitation.

I haven’t exercised for ages / have an injury will I be able to do it?

In yoga you listen to your body and do what feels right! I offer lots of variations for poses, using props such as blocks, so that you can find what works for you. It can be as gentle or as intense as you want to make it! If you struggle getting up and down off the floor we can use props such as a chair!

Are there any do’s and don’ts I need to know about?

Only one real ‘rule’, you must complete a health questionnaire and declaration form before your first class.

Everything else is guidance to ensure everyone enjoys the space and classes. To respect your own and everyone elses’ practice please arrive about 10 minutes before the class start time. I cannot answer the door once a class has started! Personal items are best left outside of the room. Its a small space and less clutter = more calm. It is requested that phones are left outside of the room, but that may not be practical for you so this is your personal choice, if you choose or need your phone in the room it can be set to silent without vibration.

The most important guideline is to listen to your body!

Anything else?

There’s no such thing as a daft question. I had lots myself before I went to my first class or a new place. For whatever you want to know I have more FAQs here or you can drop me an email, a text, give me a call or even pop in for a cuppa and a chat!

How do I book a class?

Bookings can be made by email, phone, in person or on the class booking form. Booking in advance is essential. You can call anytime up to 1 hour before a class starts to see if there is space available. I will respond most quickly to a ringing phone ;-)

How much are classes, how do I pay, what if I need to cancel?

Price depends on the length of the class and whether its a group or a private lesson. You can buy a single class pass, or for best value purchase a block of 4 passes. You can pay cash or by bank transfer. Payment is required in advance (except for your first class). I will advertise the price of classes, series and workshops in advance. Refunds can be in full, partial or not at all depending on the notice given, the situation and the opportunities to transfer classes - read my full policy here.

What should I wear?

Yoga is practiced in any comfortable stretchy or spacious clothes and bare feet, you may want layers so you can remove a layer after the warm up and put it back on for relaxation. You may wish to keep socks on, but this can restrict you in more physical practices when you want your feet to stick to the mat. If you do need the support of a soft shoe please bring a separate ‘indoor only’ pair.

What about food and drink?

Yoga is most comfortably practiced on an empty stomach. It should be at least 2-3 hours since your last heavy meal. However, if you are hungry a light snack beforehand is preferable to being lightheaded or distracted by hunger. Sipping water throughout the practice is fine. The more you practice the more you will get to know what suits you best.

What do I need to bring with me?

You don’t need to bring anything special. If you have a yoga mat or any props that you love please do bring them, you can also bring a water bottle. Otherwise I can supply everything, including mats and drinks.
